Târgu Mureş. The Fortified Church

The Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania, launched in 1993, presents the most precious examples of Transylvanian built heritage connected to the Hungarian culture, with the purpose of drawing the general public's attention on values, heritage and our responsibilities towards these. The publications of this series are recommended especially to those who at present own or use such values, but also to those who are interested in history, architecture and the Transylvanian art.

Number 7 of the Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania presents the church and castle from Târgu Mureş, "he Szekler Capital". The settlement raised to the rank of free royal town in 1616 gained its appearance as modern city at the beginning of the 20th century, while György Bernády was its mayor. The Gothic Franciscan church, finished around 1400, became a Calvinist religious edifice after 1556. The first general synod of the Hungarian Calvinists from 1559 was held in this church, where the first creed in Hungarian was drawn up. The monastery functioned as a school between 1557 and 1601. The first fortified precinct of the church, dating from the 15th century, was integrated in the modern fortification in the 17th century, who's artillery towers were taken care of by the different guilds of the town. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the castle was used by the Austrian army.
