Sălard. Calvinist Church

The Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania, launched in 1993, presents the most precious examples of Transylvanian built heritage connected to the Hungarian culture, with the purpose of drawing the general public's attention on values, heritage and our responsibilities towards these. The publications of this series are recommended especially to those who at present own or use such values, but also to those who are interested in history, architecture and the Transylvanian art.

Number 20 of the Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania presents the Calvinist Church and Adorján Castle, both located in Sălard. In the Middle Ages, the market town was in the possession of the influential Csáki family. This was where Miklós Csáki founded a Franciscan monastery in the 1400s, in the honour of Virgin Mary. Due to the spread of Reformation, the monastery ceased to function in 1558. The current Gothic church with a polygonal choir, built mainly in the 15th century, was the family's burial place; the funeral chapel decorated with frescoes is to be found at the tower's ground floor. Adorján Castle, built between 1241 and 1276, but which by now is almost completely destroyed, was the power base of several politically significant families.
